Starting from Hong Kong Meicheng mooncakes, mainland production leads to controversy

Internet celebrity Brother Yang and his team recommended a product called "Mei Cheng Mooncake" in a recent live stream, which highlighted "Hong Kong" as a promotion point. However, whether the mooncake is a traditional brand in Hong Kong has raised questions among the public. Subsequent media investigations revealed that the mooncake was actually produced in Guangdong Province and was not sold in the Hong Kong market.

After some verification, it can be learned that the brand operator of "Meicheng Mooncake" is Guangzhou Meicheng Food Co., Ltd., and the production is handled by Guangzhou Meicheng Food Technology Co., Ltd., which is also located in the Huadu District of Guangzhou. Both companies claim to be affiliated with a parent company called Hong Kong Meicheng Food Group Co., Ltd.

Interestingly, Guangzhou Meicheng Food Technology Co., Ltd. was established in 2014, while Hong Kong Meicheng Food Group Co., Ltd. was established in 2019, later than the former. Between 2023 and 2024, Hong Kong Meicheng Group registered a number of mooncake-related trademarks with the word "Meicheng" in Hong Kong, including the text and graphic trademark of "Hong Kong Meicheng Mooncake". The registration date of this trademark was September 22, 2023, and it was just about a year old when it was discovered.
